Step Six: Were entirely ready to have God remove all of these defects of character.
After sharing your inventory in step 5 it is now time to use what I like to call “the power steps” , 6 and 7 , to get rid of these objectionable items. Step 6 is about drawing out the willingness to give them up. Once again willingness is the key. When you can look back and see that you were given freedom from alcohol/drugs or whatever the obsession, maybe now you can believe that God can take the defects of character as well. If you had been able to rid yourself of your short comings on your own, you would have done so before now.
What are these defects of character?
These are the items you wrote down in your 4th step. A sponsor can be very helpful here as well. After you have read the 4th step, they can help point out these defects. As human beings we were given instincts to help us to survive. However we have taken some of these to the point of abusing them.
Usually resentments, fear, selfishness, and dishonesty are much of what you have written down. Also it has been said that the 7 deadly sins are the defects or shortcomings. The 7 typically are; Pride, Anger, Greed, Gluttony, Envy, Lust, and Sloth.
How do I become entirely ready?
There is never going to be perfection. This step will be more a way of life than a one and done deal. We will never become perfect in our lives and you won’t achieve perfection here either. Again, willingness and honesty are what you have going for you. The rest is up to God, as you understand him.
Sometimes you can only be willing enough to have God remove some things and not others. Perhaps you have a defect or two you still enjoy and do not see the harm in it. Perfection, or 100% can only be achieved, and necessarily so, in the 1st step. Everything else is achieved by spiritual progress. So you express the willingness to give up the ones you can and ask God for the willingness to give up the rest.
